THE FUTURE OF WIRELESS COMMUNICATION : LI FI

LiFi stands for Light Fidelity.

Both LiFi and WiFi technologies are mainly used for applications which use internet. LiFi uses light as medium for data communication where as WiFi uses Electromagnetic waves for data communication.
LiFi uses optical communication technology where as WiFi uses radio communication technology.

Understanding LiFi:

LiFi is a wireless optical network technology that uses light-emitting diodes (LED) for data transmission.
LiFi is designed to use LED light bulbs similar to those currently in use in many energy-conscious homes and offices. However, LiFi bulbs are outfitted with a micro processing system that modulates the light imperceptibly for optical data transmission. LiFi data (internet) is transmitted by the LED bulbs and received by photo-receptors on electronic devices.
LiFi's early developed models were capable of 150 megabits-per-second (Mbps).
Some commercial kits enabling that speed have been released.
In the near future with stronger LED's and different technology, researchers have enabled 10 gigabits-per-second (Gbps), which is faster than 802.11 ad (common wireless protocol used by WiFi devices).
Advantages of LiFi:
  • Higher speeds than WiFi.
  • 10000 times the frequency range of radio waves.
  • More secure because data cannot be intercepted without a clear line of sight.
  • Prevents hijacking.
  • Eliminates neighboring network interference.
  • Unaffected by radio interference.
  • Does not create interference in other electronics, making it useful in environments like hospitals and aircrafts.
By using LiFi in all the lights in and around a building, the technology will have a bigger area of coverage than a single WiFi router.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WiFi AND LiFi

The only Drawbacks to the technology are:

1. It requires a clear line of sight.
2. Difficulties with mobility.
3. The lights should stay on until the requirement is complete.
